Billy Sushi

If I hadn’t been reluctant to visit Billy Sushi because 1) I’ve finally learned my lesson and do not rely solely on people’s food recommendations, especially when it comes to Japanese food and 2) I just couldn’t wrap my brain around a sushi place being named “Billy Sushi”, I’d have a lot less money in my bank account. This time, people were right. And I won’t ever judge a place by its name again.

Billy Sushi is one of the best sushi restaurants I have ever been to. You won’t want to go if you don’t want to pay for what you get, but believe me when I say, this place is doing everything right.

From the great selection of fresh fish to the impeccable service, you won’t even notice the 1.5-hour time limit per reservation. (1.5 hours at a sushi restaurant, or any Japanese restaurant for that matter, has always been fine with me.) And yes, you MUST have a reservation. That is, if you can get one. I am so glad a reservation is required because if not, I’d be tempted to take the 5-minute walk a lot more often than once a month!!

For our second visit, we somehow lucked out and got a reservation on one of the two nights they were celebrating their 2-year anniversary and were treated to 3 grades of delicious tuna sashimi (see photo) and bottomless pours of really good sake! This made up for all the happy hours my daughter and I joke about missing. (Seems we always arrive on the wrong day or just before or after happy hour.)

According the Billy Sushi website, owner Billy chose from among 95 ways to write “sushi” when naming his restaurant. (One of the reasons Japanese is such a difficult language because they literally make up names by choosing from thousands of kanji characters!) Appropriately, 寿司 means Celebration of Fish. And although we did visit on a day of celebration, our first experience was just as celebratory!

If you’re in the Minneapolis area, even within 100 miles, I’d go here. But if you happen to downtown for a concert, or baseball or football game, you can literally walk. But don’t forget to make a reservation. And I’m not kidding when I say you’d better do it well in advance. The only way we get in is because we don’t mind (actually prefer) eating early.

For you true sashimi fans, I highly recommend the Chef’s Choice Sashimi (30-piece). And though I haven’t had it yet, my guess is, one of my favorite go-tos at sushi restaurants (and Denny’s after Japanese class when I lived in Tokyo) their Chirashi Bowl is very good.
